More Then A Hammer

There is an old adage that goes something like this... 'if your only tool is a is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail' . This 'one tool does it all' approach applies to many in the business consulting field today. Many of my colleagues will recommend you get SAP, or PeopleSoft, or JDEdwards... whatever they know best becomes the solution that is best for you. Buy and implement just one system, that will do everything needed to manage your organization. There is some truth to that... One system is what is required but you cannot buy it. The reason is that "everything needed to manage your organization" changes constantly. New strategies, new technologies, new applications are changing our lives and the way we do business continually. You can't buy your future, but you can prepare for it.

We advocate a single system as well but without the cost and constraint of propitiatory packages. We prefer an approach where the investment is predominately in your own organization. An approach that leave you and your organization as experts in your own systems and processes.  A solution that leaves you and your team equipped to deal with the inevitable disruptions coming our way.

Which brings us to our tool set. Predominately Open Source applications (you own and can configure or adapt the software as required)  or freely available tools and utilities that will speed processes and reduce cost. Tailored together in a single platform that is also open, and free.

Joomla! - Arguably the best of the best Open Source Content Management Systems. Joomla becomes the framework within which we will construct your Enterprise Management System. Joomla has over 8,000 extensions covering requirements from shared calendars, Contact Management Systems, Project Management, to  Document Management, and much more... even ERP.

Source Forge - For anything that cannot be found in the native Joomla! extension directory there is Source Forge, a global catalog of Open Source products and projects.

Google Apps - Want to shed the licensing burdens associated with Microsoft Office and Exchange, and jump in to the open collaborative world of shared documents? There is money to be saved not only in licensing but think about this.... hwo often do you work with others to produce a single document. How many versions are flying around on your network... who has the latest one, how much time is spent making sure everyone is on the same page? Well if there was but one document... all of that goes away. The process is efficient and effective as communication and collaboration take place at the same time, not in some linear, toss it over the wall process. Spreadsheet, Presentation, Document, Forms, Drawing... all available through Google Apps

Skype - For my money, this is perhaps the most powerful and important collaboration tool available, especially for those organizations where employees and business partners must work together over great distance.

In general, just about anything an organization might need is available for download, and free. That leaves the lion share of investment directed toward integrating components, documenting new or modified processes and training your 'system citizens' .

What We Do

What Ever Is Necessary…

To Facilitate Change
In Process
In People
In Organizations… Systems.

There is an interesting dynamic that has developed in recent times. Given the resources available today in terms of information and technology, organizations are more capable of change then ever before. Understand that the process of creating change generates more knowledge, ultimately improving information and technology resources…. And all this, because of improving resources, is happening faster then ever before.

So what do we do?
We help organizations deal with this accelerated pace of change. We emphasize Organizational Learning in all we do with an overall objective of instilling “change” as a core competency.

How We Do It

Smoke and Mirrors? No Way!

No, no smoke and mirrors,  no cookie cutter approach to how we do things, no gold or silver bullet, no 'polyrazzmatazz' for sale, just proven, contemporary techniques and strategies that work. There is no up front investment in any software package. We don't believe in that.

We do not believe you can purchase and implement someone else's idea of "Best Practices".  Buying and implementing 'one system to do it all' was never a good idea. It has always been a risky investment, coupled to a long, arduous, perilous and costly implementation.

Ironically, if you are successful, if you survive the implementation, chances are you will have a rock solid technology platform, a foundation on which to build and manage your business. The irony is that with technology changing as rapidly as it is, and  global competition nipping and nibbling at market share, agility is more prized then stability.

"Change" must be a core competency. A purchased system, running proprietary software, software that requires the intervention of consultants to deal with inevitable changes in process and technology will ultimately fail.

We don't take that approach. We work with your team to identify and prioritize process innovation / improvement opportunities. Some are simple, some may not require any technology at all. Our first objective is to understand our client's requirement. Not just today's task at hand, but a picture of a desired outcome over an extended period of time. This ensures that today's solution will not become tomorrows problem, and this is where we differentiate ourselves from most technology services.

We look for proven, Open Source solutions that will fit, or may be adapted to fit, the immediate requirement.  During the entire process, we work with / through the client's team to ensure that everyone is on the same page as we move forward. When the implementation is complete there is an intimate understanding of 'how things are done', in terms of process, people and programs.

This is an incremental approach to building a system. Here is a quick rundown of the benefits :

1 - As process improvements are implemented the time and dollars saved may be used to fund additional improvement

2 - Given that employees will be intimately involved in crafting solutions they will ultimately possess the knowledge to recognize new opportunity and drive change

3 - The software belongs to you. You may change it as needed at minimal expense, often, in house.

4 - There is no risk associated with a large software / implementation investment and consequently no new licensing and support fees to absorb

We create and manage our projects using :

"Process Pinatas" a means by which we can model and document a system change proposal then, in a group, knock it around and see if anything good falls out.

A Project Management technique that is easy to understand and follow. This technique keeps everyone informed in terms of resource schedule, status, Estimated Time to Completion (ETC)

'Process Objects', a methodology that provides process visibility of both the before and after state. The Process Object is especially important as a process is not actually visible. There are different perspectives on how things get done. There needs to be a shared perspective, an explicit depiction of "what is" before collaborating on "what will be".

A New Day

The older organization model, supported by the hierarchy of command and control has been trashed.  The older organization may posses, but is not truly enabled, by technology. In fact it resists technology and the change it brings seeking instead, compliance and stability .

The new organization is structured along it's supply chain, and as a component of a larger enterprise. The new organization is much more likely to succeed in today's network centric environment. The network facilitates co-operation and collaboration in the innovation of both process and product, it is a natural occurrence. This because virtually every node on 'the network' has an explicit role, an interest in it's deliverable and success of the others (customers).
